Cyber Media Guidelines
Freedom of opinion, expression, and the press are human rights protected by the 1945 Constitution. Cyber media are part of that freedom, so they must be managed with responsibility and professionalism and in compliance with Law No. 40 of 1999 on the Press (Undang-Undang Nomor 40 Tahun 1999 tentang Pers) and the Journalistic Code of Ethics.
Kanaan Global has drawn up these guidelines in reference to the Cyber Media Reporting Guidelines (Pedoman Pemberitaan Media Siber) issued by the Press Council (Dewan Pers), and applies them to the management of all content on this site.
1. Scope
- Cyber media means any form of media that uses the internet and carries out journalistic activities in accordance with the Press Law and the standards set by the Press Council.
- User-generated content means any content created and published by users of cyber media, including articles, images, comments, audio, video, and other uploads attached to the cyber media outlet.
2. News Verification and Balance
- In principle, every news story undergoes verification.
- News that could harm another party requires verification so that it is fair and balanced.
- An exception applies only when the story concerns an urgent public interest; the primary source of the story is clearly identified, credible, and competent; the subject of the story cannot be located or cannot be interviewed; and the outlet informs readers that the story still requires further verification.
- After a story under such an exception is published, the editorial team must continue verifying it and publish the results, with a link to the unverified story.
3. User-Generated Content
Where Kanaan Global opens a space for user-generated content, such as a comments section, the following provisions apply:
- Users must agree to terms and conditions that prohibit false, defamatory, sadistic, and obscene content; content containing prejudice and hatred related to ethnicity, religion, race, and inter-group relations, or advocating violence; and content that discriminates on the basis of sex or language, or that demeans the dignity of people who are weak, poor, sick, mentally disabled, or physically disabled.
- The editorial team has the authority to edit or remove user-generated content that violates these provisions.
- The editorial team provides a mechanism for complaints about violating user-generated content and follows up on them within 2 x 24 hours of receiving the complaint.
4. Errata, Corrections, and Right of Reply
- Errata, corrections, and the right of reply follow the Press Law, the Journalistic Code of Ethics, and the Right of Reply Guidelines issued by the Press Council.
- Errata, corrections, and/or replies are linked to the story that is being corrected, amended, or answered, and are accompanied by a note stating when they were published.
- If a story is redistributed by another cyber media outlet, responsibility for the story remains with the outlet that produced it, while the outlet that redistributes it must also publish the erratum, correction, or reply.
- A cyber media outlet that does not honor the right of reply may be sanctioned in accordance with the Press Law.
5. Removal of News
- A published story may not be removed on grounds of censorship from outside the editorial team, except in matters concerning ethnicity, religion, race, and inter-group relations, decency, the future of a child, the traumatic experience of a victim, or other special considerations determined by the Press Council.
- Other cyber media outlets must follow the removal of quotations from the original outlet's story that has been taken down.
- Every removal of a story is accompanied by a reason that is announced to the public.
6. Advertising
- Cyber media must clearly distinguish between news products and advertising.
- Any story, article, or content that is an advertisement and/or paid content must be labeled "advertorial," "advertisement," "ads," "sponsored," or another word making clear that the content is an advertisement.
7. Copyright
Kanaan Global respects copyright as regulated by applicable laws and regulations.
8. Publication of the Guidelines
These guidelines are displayed openly on the Kanaan Global site so that users can read them easily.
9. Disputes
The final assessment of any dispute regarding the implementation of these guidelines is resolved by the Press Council.
