What Is a Sound System? Meaning and Main Components
Ever wondered what a sound system is? Learn the sound system meaning, how it makes audio louder, and the main components from input to output.
What is a sound system? Let's take a closer look.
The meaning of a sound system
"Sound system" combines two words: "sound," which means audio, and "system." Put together, they describe an audio system. So what is an audio system? It is a setup built to produce a sound output that is louder than its input. The increase can be many times greater, depending on the components inside the sound system. Because it is a system, a sound system is made of different components, each with its own job in amplifying the sound and preserving its quality.
Parts of a sound system
As mentioned earlier, a sound system is built from many electronic components. These components are grouped by function, as follows:
- Input transducers
The first group we will cover is input transducers. These components capture the audio from the sound source used in the sound system. Input transducer devices include microphones, guitar spools, and pre-amp outputs such as laptops and other electronic devices.
- Audio processors
Audio processors are an essential part of a sound system because they produce a louder sound. This stage typically requires equipment such as a mixer and a power amplifier.
- Additional equipment
Beyond the two groups of electronic devices described above, a sound system also needs additional equipment to complete the setup. This includes equalizers, audio compressors, crossovers, audio distributors, and sound effects.
- Output transducers
The last group is output transducers. These include loudspeakers or speakers, as well as horn drivers. You probably already know what a loudspeaker is. If not, look up the speaker article we have published.
